What Is AI Visibility? β Definition and How It Is Measured
Learn what AI visibility means, how it differs from search ranking, which metrics capture it, and why it can only be measured statistically.
AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, a brand or page appears in answers generated by AI assistants and answer engines. It replaces position with presence, and a ranked list with a generated paragraph.
1. What It Measures
Three distinct things that are frequently conflated.
| Question | Metric |
|---|---|
| Are we named? | Mention rate |
| Are we linked as a source? | Citation rate |
| How are we described? | Descriptive accuracy |
A brand can be mentioned without being cited, cited without being recommended, and named with a description that is wrong.
2. Why Ranking Does Not Transfer
- No stable position. Generated answers vary between identical runs.
- Few slots. A handful of cited sources replaces ten organic listings.
- Passage-level competition. A section, not a page, is what gets quoted.
- Conversation context. Follow-up turns change what is retrieved.
A ranking report cannot express any of that, which is why AI visibility needs its own measurement.
3. How It Is Measured
- Fix a prompt set β category, comparison, problem, and brand questions, worded once and frozen.
- Run each repeatedly in clean sessions, with location and language pinned.
- Store the full response text and every citation.
- Compute rates, not verdicts: mention rate, citation rate, share of voice.
- Report variance alongside every rate.
Because the surface is generative, a single check cannot distinguish a real change from ordinary run-to-run variation.
4. Share of Voice
Measuring only your own brand gives a number with no denominator. Recording every brand named in the same responses gives share of voice, which is what actually reflects competitive position.
It also reveals substitution: which names appear when yours does not.
5. What Influences It
- Retrievability β content a fetcher can read, structured so passages chunk cleanly.
- Quotability β direct answers stated near their headings, in specific language.
- Corroboration β claims repeated across independent sources are safer to assert.
- Presence in the underlying index β being absent from search makes citation unlikely.
- Accuracy of existing coverage β engines repeat the descriptions they find.
6. Descriptive Accuracy Deserves Attention
A confident, wrong description reaching many users is worse than absence. Extract the sentence around each mention and classify it β correct, outdated, or wrong β because that is the metric that most often prompts action.
7. Common Mistakes
- Single checks. Variance frequently exceeds the effect being measured.
- Prompt drift. Rewording between runs destroys comparability.
- Ignoring competitors. A citation count on its own has no denominator, so it cannot show whether you are gaining or losing ground.
- Storing booleans. Keep raw text so metrics can be recomputed later.
- Treating it as ranking. Position has no meaning in a generated paragraph.
8. Summary
AI visibility is presence in generated answers, measured as mention, citation, and descriptive accuracy rates across repeated runs of a frozen prompt set.
It is inherently statistical because the surface is generative. Treat it as sampling with variance, always measure competitors alongside yourself, and give the description an engine gives of you the same weight as whether it names you at all.
