What Is an ASN? – Definition and How It Works

Informational P3 what is an asn

Learn what an Autonomous System Number is, how ASN lookups classify an IP, and why it is the strongest proxy signal.

An Autonomous System Number identifies a network that operates its own routing policy β€” an ISP, a hosting provider, a large enterprise. Every routable IP address belongs to one.

1. What an Autonomous System Is

The internet is a network of networks. Each independently administered network with its own routing policy is an autonomous system, identified by a number and announcing which address ranges it is responsible for via BGP.

That announcement is public. Anyone can look up which AS an address belongs to, and what kind of organisation runs it.

2. Why It Matters More Than the IP

This is the key point for anyone thinking about IP reputation: an ASN is not a property of a single address but of the network it belongs to.

Question Answer from
Is this a hosting provider? ASN
Is this a consumer ISP? ASN
Is this a mobile carrier? ASN
Which country and organisation? ASN registration
Is this address currently in use? Not the ASN

Because ASN membership is public and stable, classifying an address as datacenter or residential is a lookup, not an inference. There is nothing to evade β€” the network itself publishes what it is.

3. The Practical Consequence

A request from a major cloud provider's ASN is identifiable as datacenter traffic instantly and with certainty. No amount of browser-level configuration changes that, because the classification happens before any header is read.

This is why datacenter proxies are distinguishable from residential ones regardless of what the client does, and why "undetectable" claims about datacenter addresses do not hold up against an ASN check.

4. Categories in Practice

Category Typical origin How a site reads it
Consumer ISP Home broadband Ordinary user traffic
Mobile carrier Cellular networks Ordinary, often shared via CGNAT
Hosting or cloud Servers Automated, unless proven otherwise
Corporate Enterprise networks Ordinary business traffic
Anonymising services VPNs, Tor exits Explicitly flagged

A mobile ASN is interesting because carrier-grade NAT means many subscribers share one address, so per-IP rate limiting is unreliable there and sites treat those addresses more leniently.

5. Looking It Up

Bulk classification uses a downloadable database mapping prefixes to ASNs and organisation names, refreshed periodically since allocations change.

For a collection operation this is worth doing on your own egress addresses: it tells you what a target sees before the target tells you.

6. Legitimate Uses

  • Auditing your own egress. Confirming that a proxy pool is actually what a provider claims.
  • Diagnosing blocks. A block correlating with one ASN rather than with individual addresses identifies the real cause.
  • Geographic verification. ASN registration data is usually more reliable than commercial IP-geolocation for country-level accuracy.
  • Abuse handling, since an ASN identifies the responsible network operator.
  • Understanding data quality. Results that differ by egress network are a property of the dataset worth recording.

7. What It Does Not Tell You

An ASN is a network, not a user. It does not identify a person, does not prove an address is currently assigned to anyone, and does not distinguish a legitimate user of a hosting network from an automated one.

It is also coarse: a large ISP's ASN covers an entire country, so it says nothing about which city an address serves.

8. Summary

An ASN identifies an independently routed network and is publicly announced, so any IP can be mapped to the organisation and network type behind it.

That makes it the most reliable available signal for distinguishing datacenter from residential traffic β€” a classification made before any request header is examined, which no client-side configuration can change.
