What Is Organic Search? β Definition and How It Works
Learn what organic results are, how they differ from paid placements, what determines their order, and how their share of the page has changed.
Organic results are the listings a search engine returns because it judges them relevant, rather than because someone paid for placement. They are the part of a results page that cannot be bought.
1. Organic Versus Paid
| Organic | Paid | |
|---|---|---|
| Placement determined by | Relevance and quality judgement | An auction |
| Cost per click | None | Bid-dependent |
| Labelling | None required | Must be marked as an advertisement |
| Time to effect | Slow | Immediate |
| Durability | Persists while relevance holds | Stops when spending stops |
2. What Determines Order
No single factor. The judgement combines relevance to the query, content quality, the site's authority, page experience, and query context β location, device, language, and time.
Because context participates, there is no single ranking. Two people can search identically and receive different orders, both correct.
3. Organic Occupies Less of the Page Than It Did
A results page now assembles many blocks: advertisements, featured snippets, AI overviews, local packs, knowledge panels, related questions, and media carousels.
Organic listings share the page with all of them. An organic position of three can sit well below the fold once advertisements, a snippet, and a pack occupy the space above it β which is why position alone understates or overstates visibility.
4. What This Means for Measurement
Measuring organic performance means recording the block structure, not just the position. Two sites at the same organic rank on different queries can have very different visibility.
It also means pinning location, device, and language, since all three change what is returned.
5. What Earns Organic Placement
- Matching intent. A format that does not match what the query wants will not rank regardless of quality.
- Substantive content that answers the question completely.
- Technical accessibility β crawlable, renderable, fast.
- Clear structure, so the subject is unambiguous.
- Authority, accumulated over time through references and consistency.
6. Organic and AI Answers
Generated answers draw on retrieval over the same index that produces organic results, so the two correlate β imperfectly.
A page can rank organically and never be cited, usually because it lacks a passage that answers the question cleanly in one place. That gap is where passage-level structure earns its keep.
7. Why It Still Matters
Despite a busier page, organic listings remain the largest source of clicks for most informational and navigational queries, and they cost nothing per visit.
They are also durable in a way paid placement is not: relevance earned continues to pay after the work stops.
8. Summary
Organic results are unpaid listings ordered by a relevance and quality judgement, varying with location, device, and language.
They now share the page with advertisements, snippets, overviews, and packs, so visibility depends on what sits above a position as much as on the position itself β and measurement must record both.
