What Is a SERP Feature? β Definition and Types
Learn what SERP features are, which types appear, how they affect visibility, and why tracking them matters more than tracking position.
A SERP feature is any element on a results page other than a standard organic listing. Together they occupy most of the space above the fold on many queries.
1. The Types
| Feature | Content |
|---|---|
| Advertisements | Paid placements, labelled |
| Featured snippet | An extract answering the query |
| AI overview | A generated summary with citations |
| People also ask | Expandable related questions |
| Local pack | Nearby businesses with ratings |
| Knowledge panel | Entity facts, usually on the right |
| Image and video carousels | Media results |
| Shopping results | Product listings with prices |
| Top stories | Recent news |
| Site links | Sub-pages under one result |
| Related searches | Query suggestions |
2. Which Appear Depends on Intent
The engine assembles the page for the query. Local intent produces a pack; a definitional question produces a snippet or overview; a purchase query produces shopping results.
That is why feature presence is itself a strong signal of intent β often clearer than the words of the query.
3. Why They Matter More Than Position
An organic position of three sits below whatever features occupy the space above it. On a query with advertisements, a snippet, and a pack, position three may be well below the fold.
The same position on a feature-light query is near the top. Position alone therefore cannot express visibility, which is the central practical point.
4. Some Features Are Winnable
- Featured snippets β earned by answering directly near a heading with clean structure.
- People also ask entries β earned the same way.
- Local packs β earned through listing completeness, reviews, and proximity.
- Rich results β earned through valid structured data.
- Shopping results β through product data feeds.
- AI overview citations β through retrievable, quotable passages.
Others, such as knowledge panels for entities you do not control, are not directly winnable.
5. Some Features Reduce Clicks
A fully answered question needs no visit. Snippets and overviews on simple informational queries reduce clicks; on complex queries they often increase them by signalling depth.
Which effect dominates is query-specific, which is why blanket claims about either are unreliable.
6. Tracking Them
Record, per query: which features appeared, in what order, and whether your site occupies any of them.
That produces a picture of visibility rather than of position, and it explains changes in traffic that a stable ranking cannot β a new feature appearing above you moves traffic without moving your rank.
7. For Collection
Features are structured data: local packs carry business fields, shopping results carry product fields, related questions carry question text and answers.
A structured search API returns them parsed, which is far more reliable than extracting them from a rendered page whose layout changes frequently.
8. Summary
SERP features are the non-organic elements assembled per query β advertisements, snippets, overviews, packs, panels, carousels, and more β and their presence reflects intent.
They determine visibility more than position does, several are winnable through specific work, and tracking which appear per query explains traffic changes that ranking data alone cannot.
