What Is a Proxy Pool? – Definition and How It Works

Informational P2 what is a proxy pool

Learn what a proxy pool is, how selection and health tracking work, why per-host state matters, and what a well-run pool records.

A proxy pool is a managed set of exits with logic for choosing among them and removing the ones that are failing. Whether the pool is a provider's gateway or your own list, the same concerns apply.

1. Gateway or Self-Managed

A provider gateway exposes one endpoint and chooses the exit itself, with policy expressed through the credential β€” a session identifier for stickiness, a country code for geography.

A self-managed pool holds a list and chooses per request, which gives full control and makes health tracking your responsibility.

Start with a gateway. Build a pool when selection logic or cost control genuinely requires it.

2. Selection Strategies

Strategy Behaviour Suits
Round-robin Even rotation Predictable distribution
Random Avoids synchronised patterns across workers Multiple processes
Least recently used Maximum cool-down per exit Reputation-sensitive work
Weighted Favours faster or cleaner exits Mixed-quality pools
Sticky by task One exit per task Anything stateful

3. Health Tracking Is the Real Work

Record per exit: success count, failure count, consecutive failures, last-used time, and average latency.

Remove an exit after a few consecutive failures, retry it after a cool-down, and drop it permanently only if it fails again immediately. Without this, a handful of bad exits silently absorb a large share of requests.

4. Health Is Per Destination

An exit refused by one site may work perfectly elsewhere. A single global health score therefore discards useful information and removes exits unnecessarily.

Tracking health per exit per destination is more work and materially better, especially when collecting from several sites with different tolerances.

5. Sticky Assignment for Stateful Work

Map a task identifier to an exit so a multi-step flow keeps one address for its duration, and keep the cookie jar with it.

Changing exit mid-flow invalidates server-side state β€” the single most common cause of mysterious logouts and empty results in pooled collection.

6. What a Well-Run Pool Records

  • Which exit produced which record, so a data problem can be traced to an address.
  • Failure reasons, distinguishing timeouts from refusals from challenges.
  • Latency distribution per exit, since a slow exit that eventually succeeds can be worse than a fast failure.
  • Bandwidth per exit, where billing is by volume.

7. What a Pool Does Not Solve

Rotation changes the address and nothing else. Headers, TLS characteristics, behaviour, and pacing are identical across every exit, so a client identifiable for those reasons remains identifiable β€” the pattern simply appears across many addresses.

Nor does a pool license higher volume. Aggregate rate is what a destination observes.

8. Summary

A proxy pool manages a set of exits with selection strategy, per-exit health tracking, and sticky assignment for stateful work.

Track health per destination rather than globally, record which exit produced which data, and remember that rotation addresses one signal while pacing and client consistency address the rest.
